Publishing a collection of self-care strategies

About

The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families published a collection of over 90 self-care strategies based on speaking to professionals and academic research.

The collection was developed by Common Room and young people from mental health support group Hearts & Minds.

For each strategy, they explain how people use it to help and what young people have told them about this strategy.

They include a wide range of strategies, from mindfulness to board games.

Key guidance

Encourage young people to try different things out and see what works for them.

Combine academic evidence with what young people say works for them.

Explain that self-care is not a substitute for professional help.

Make a clearly visible link to get urgent help on every page.

Risks

  • Self-care is not appropriate for all situations and should not be seen as a substitute for professional support.
